The Offbeat Map answers a kind of question that travel guides tend to skip: why things work the way they do in each part of the world.
Why most streets in Japan have no name. Why an Italian town would sell a house for one euro. Why Iceland lives with its clocks ahead of the sun. These are stories about customs, rules, food, cities and nature, told with what’s useful to know before you travel.
Who writes it
I’m Vinicius Alencar. I live in São Paulo, Brazil, and I’ve been to more than 50 countries. In many of them, what stayed with me were the everyday details nobody explains: a rule that seems odd, an unusual schedule, a custom that only makes sense to the people who live there. The Offbeat Map grew out of wanting to understand those details and share what I found.
I’m not a tour guide or an expert on every country. That’s why every article starts with research: I read the law, the official data and the local press, and I only publish what I can confirm.
What you’ll find here
Articles fall into eight topics: country curiosities, food and culture, off the beaten path, travel costs, nature and geography, visas and documents, cities and transport, and languages and customs. Everything is published in English and Portuguese.
How articles are made
- Each piece starts from a concrete question and sets out to answer it fully, without padding.
- Facts are checked before publication. Numbers, dates, laws and rules come with their source, listed at the end of each article.
- Information that changes over time, such as prices, local calls for buyers and visa rules, is dated and points to the official source, so you can check whether anything has changed.
- Photos come from image libraries with free licenses, with the photographer credited in each article.
Corrections
If you spot a mistake, let us know through the Contact page. The article is corrected and gets a note at the end with the date and what changed.
