How much does a trip to Japan cost? What the data shows
Foreign visitors spent an average of ¥229,000 per trip in Japan in 2025. See where the money goes and how to build a budget for your own trip.
The average foreign visitor to Japan in 2025 spent ¥229,000 per trip, according to the Japan Tourism Agency’s preliminary survey. That’s spending inside the country, and the average hides big gaps: Germans, Britons and Australians topped ¥390,000, while South Koreans came in at ¥104,606.
It doesn’t answer “how much is a day in Japan,” because the figure is per trip, not per night. But it shows two things that matter when you’re planning: accommodation is by far the biggest item, and trip length moves your total more than the price of any bowl of ramen.
Where the money goes
Total foreign spending in Japan in 2025 was ¥9.4559 trillion, up 16.4% on 2024. By category, according to the agency:
| Category | Amount | Share of total |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | ¥3.4617 trillion | 36.6% |
| Shopping | ¥2.5490 trillion | 27% |
| Food and drink | ¥2.0711 trillion | 21.9% |
| Transport | ¥946.5 billion | 10% |
| Entertainment and services | ¥421.8 billion | 4.5% |
Accommodation and shopping add up to almost two thirds of what visitors leave behind. Eating, which most people assume weighs the most, comes third at a little over a fifth.
Who spends the most, and who spends the least
Per trip, the biggest spenders came from Germany (¥393,710), the United Kingdom (¥390,391) and Australia (¥390,048). The lowest spending was South Korea’s, at ¥104,606.
The survey I read doesn’t break out Brazilian visitors, and I won’t guess a number for them. You can read the gap between the extremes as a signal: people who come from nearby and stay a few days spend less. People who cross the world tend to stay longer and spend more per trip, but that’s my reading, not something the survey states.
How to build your own budget
The average shows proportions, not your case. A practical way to use the table:
- Fix your accommodation first. It tends to be about a third of the total. If your hotel already goes past that, the rest of the trip needs to be leaner.
- Set aside something for shopping, even if you think you won’t buy anything. Per the survey, it accounts for 27% of average spending.
- Add the new taxes and rules. The departure tax, Kyoto’s accommodation tax and the new tax-refund system change the sum. The figures are in Japan’s new travel taxes in 2026.
- Convert at the day’s exchange rate. The yen moves, and any figure converted months ahead can go stale.
